"Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible." ~Mary McLeod Bethune~

Dear Friends of Alanna DeSalvo,

We reach out to you today with the hope that you may want to support Alanna in her next big step of recovery.

As you may remember, just over 4 years ago Alanna suffered a severe spinal cord injury leaving her paralyzed below the chest. At that point and for two consecutive years, you were a very generous contributor to her cause.

Thanks to your generosity Alanna has been able to:

  • Continue with exercise therapy 5 days a week
  • Purchase and utilize equipment at home
  • Purchase an accessible van and modify it with hand controls so Alanna can drive and be independent.

We are very proud of Alanna’s achievements, having graduated from high school and currently attending University of San Francisco on a generous scholarship.

Alanna has been able to thrive these last four years from your generous love and support. Although each and everyday brings its range of physical and emotional challenges, Alanna manages to persevere, continuing to strive for all that is important to her.

In  June of this year we took Alanna to Panama to receive stem cell treatment over the course of a month. She had bone marrow removed from both hips.  The cells were then cultured and injected into her spinal column as well as cells from donated umbilical cords.  The procedure has gained the confidence of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, but is unavailable in the United States.

Our hopes are high for Alanna's recovery potential.  It can take at least 6 months to see any change, yet we have already noticed a difference in her autonomic nervous system. Her body has been unable to regulate her body temperature since her accident.  However, she is now able to tolerate the cold weather without feeling miserable and cold to the bone.

If you feel the call to want to help, donations, prayers and good thoughts are greatly appreciated. We could not have made the progress we’ve made today without the financial, emotional and spiritual support of our community and people like you.

We hope to see you on Wednesday, November 9th at The Southern Pacific Smokehouse in Novato for a special evening of food, friends and fundraising!

With much love and gratitude

Doug, Angela, Alanna & Maria
